The issues of formation and prospective development of settlement systems in border territories are gaining popularity in Russian urban planning. This is due to the changes that have taken place in the spatial structure of Russia over the past two decades. The territories of the new regions became part of the state. These changes set the task for the author of the article to identify the directions of the prospective development of their settlement systems, including taking into account the ongoing geopolitical processes. Based on the analysis of disputed regions similar to the object of the study, the study of cross-border processes at the interregional and interstate levels, the features of the structural organization of border spaces are determined. It is proposed to take them into account when preparing spatial development programs for new regions and territorial planning documents developed in relation to their territories.
