The article presents the results of a comparison of the principles of constructing the traditional Japanese literary form of haiku with architectural techniques for organizing space. Five main principles are identified, two of which ("kigo" and "kireji") are mandatory, while the other three – "ma", "sabi", and "yugen" – are aesthetic and philosophical categories that are reflected in both architecture and haiku poetry. The comparison is based on the works of three contemporary Japanese architectural firms: NAP, Nendo, and Mount Fuji Architects Studio. The proposed correspondences were refined in consultation with researchers in Japanese studies from the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University.
contemporary Japanese architecture, haiku poetry, contemplative space, the category of emptiness in architecture, visual permeability of space
